Opening Sequence Analysis of Se7en

Se7en is a Thriller psychological crime film. it has a very unique opening.

The purpose of Se7en’s opening sequence is to confuse the audience, but also get them interested at what is happening, at what it is the man is making. Some of the audience may even be disturbed from the opening. There are many different conventions that can be seen in the opening because the film is a hybrid genre of thriller, psychological crime. There are things like gutting letters out of newspapers, which would be expected in a crime genre film. There is heartbeat music, which would be psychological to attempt to make the audience uneasy. And there are some disturbing images, which would usually be shown in thrillers.

There was not a wide variety of shots in the opening. There was mostly point of view shots, but there was also some close ups and extreme close ups. The camera is mostly handheld, and the area is dark suggesting that it is underground, maybe a basement. All we can work out from the opening is that a man is making some sort of book, and he doesn’t want the police to know his identity, it also suggests that the book may be sent to someone. And then the police will get involved.

The text in the opening looks like chalk written onto a chalkboard. This is because the genre is thriller, which means unusual fonts are to be expected. There is no continuity editing to try and confuse the audience. This is typical of crime and psychological films.

There is no diegetic sound in the scene, there is some creepy music, and parts that sound like a radio picking up static, and another part that sounds like a tape being rewound. There is also a link to god at the end where there are lyrics that say, “You got me closer to god” suggesting some religious link also suggesting that the book made could be a bible of some sort.

There is not much we can get about the character or narrative in the opening. One conclusion I came to was that the man may have some sort of military background, because he is doing a military procedure of blacking out unimportant parts in a document and a black line across someone’s eyes in a photo to keep them anonymous suggesting he was in the military or something similar.

Opening titles

Here I will talk about several film openings and what makes them effective.

Skyfall.

There are some statues shown at the start of the opening around 1:12 are then shown again towards the end around 3:28 but broken and crumbling down, suggesting that in the film, the character might break down or crumble. it could also suggest that all is coming to an end for the main character.

Man of Steel

The opening titles for Man of Steel only have some production animations, there is not actors credits, or directors or producers, suggesting that the people who made this want the audience to go straight into the film and not be distracted by credits, meaning that some important information may be shared at the beginning.

Spiderman

The Spiderman opening title is unique. We see webs being cast with the main actors names, the directors names and some of the producers and other people of importance names are displayed. There is also some photos of iconic buildings in New York, for example, the Empire State building.

Spiderman 2

The opening title for Spiderman 2 is very good. The credits last 3:01 and the main actors names are show, as wells as the director and some producers names. There is also pictures of the important scenes from the first film. The title is a series of webs with names appearing on the webs.

The Amazing Spiderman

At first the opening is standard production companies animations, but there is then a short bit where some companies and the title of the film come up on some webs. This is a rather short opening which is strange as most films will also show main actors names as well as producers and director's names.

The Amazing Spiderman 2

There is the standard company animations, the Marvel animation before going straight to the film with a scientist of some sort in a lab with spiders. There could be some important information shown here which a possible reason as to why there is now credits.

Casino Royale

At the start of the title the name of the film is shown, Casino Royale, there then lots of things you would expect in a casino, like cards. The bullets fired from the guns are shamed like suits form cards. Also when the people are defeated in combat, they break down into different bits which are also suits from cards, like hearts and dimonds. There is also thinks like roulette boards.
